Clapton Common Play Area

London Borough of Hackney

Designed by Erect Architecture and subcontracted to APES by Collinson’s Landscaping Company, this highly successful and much-used playground was shortlisted for the 2012 Hackney Design Awards. The play structures are made from locally sourced oak and Black Poplar (used for making windmill blades), with the largest tree used on the slide structure rescued from the Victoria Park renovation – further signs of our commitment to green approaches. An array of nets, ropes and branches extends the canopy, creating a set of challenges for all abilities, from a dizzying ropewalk to low-level lounging nets. The project was supported, inspired and part funded by the local community, and their engagement is evident in the play area’s popularity.
