Leyton Green
Respite Centre
London Borough of Waltham Forest
This much-used and essential site for disabled children started out with a small, underused back garden and a large car park, and ended up with a large garden area and a small car park. Who said there's no such thing as progress?
APES designed the site to be a fun, inclusive and green space to support the play needs of disabled children. Following consultation with the kids, the site was completely excavated, renovated and landscaped.
The children benefit from a number of smaller play features including musical instruments made from recycled materials, a long bridge leading to a small castle and an accessible slide, a fireman’s pole and a six-sided accessible swing structure. A greenhouse and raised beds were built with hard wood recycled from discarded railway sleepers sourced from the Hungerford Bridge at Didcot.
