Kite Park Playground

Cator Park, Kidbrooke

Designed by APES in consultation with HTA Architects for Berkeley Homes, Kite park is one of our most ambitious builds to date. Designed to resemble kites, this play area has been developed to maximise play space as the ‘kite’ shape provides more playable space than traditional cone shaped towers.

Working with main contractors Elite Landscapes, the park includes a range of slides, swings, climbing bars, nets, tunnels, a swale with natural log crossings, climbing wall and cast iron stepping stones locally made by children in community workshops run by APES.

The site has been developed to be ecologically sustainable as possible using reclaimed and recycled materials. Everything has been sourced and/or produced within England. The stag oak/oak cladding and the natural log crossings were sourced from an FSC managed woodland in Oxford. The timbers for the climbing wall are reclaimed Jarrah (tropical hard wood) sourced from an old British rail track, and features of the swale crossings and benches are from Woolwich Pier (which was recently demolished).

The playground sits within a beautifully landscaped park designed in consultation with The Wildlife Trust, it is now home to the families and children moving into the new affordable homes development by Berkelely as part of the boroughs 15 year re-generation plan.
